Abstract

The rapid population growth has resulted in the expansion and intensification of agricultural areas worldwide, modifying ecological processes in large extensions of land. In this regard, it is commonly known that some of the most prone lands to degradation/desertification and abandonment after agricultural activities are those where water is a limiting factor. This is why, through previously conducted studies, the present manuscript discusses the case of the Costa de Hermosillo, one of the most symbolic cases of agricultural land abandonment in arid regions of Mexico. Specifically, we describe 1) how literature reports the drastic reduction of agricultural lands between the end of the past century and the beginning of the present one (more than 50,000 abandoned hectares) and 2) how vegetation cover has evolved after abandonment in some of these sites.
