Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Mexico and worldwide. Multiple studies have focused on finding new alternatives for the treatment of this neoplasm, including research of natural products. Propolis, a resin produced by bees, has a highly variable chemical composition which depends on the botanical sources available in the geographic area and the season of collection. Its antiproliferative activity is mainly due to induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. This article provides an overview of breast cancer and its classifications, examines the significance of the cell cycle and its different phases, and addresses the chemical complexity of propolis and its biological activity. Finally, it details the intracellular mechanisms responsible for the antiproliferative effects of propolis on breast cancer, with particular emphasis on its ability to halt the cell cycle.
